Index Search

Most records held by the Utah State Archives are not indexed and of those that are, only a few are in electronic format. Some creating agencies may have indexed records, but frequently these are found as an index at the beginning or end of an individual volume, or as a separate record series. Such indexes are then available in paper or on microfilm.

Try this: Advanced Death Certificate Search

• Both personal names and corporate names are searchable, as well as some subjects.
• To search for a personal name, use "surname, givenname middlename" or "givenname" or "middlename" separately
• Truncation, or partial words or names are fine, but do not use wildcard characters, for example "Pete" will return "Peter," "Petersen" and "Peterson"
• Tip: Begin with only the surname and then browse the possible matches
• Remember married women will be found under their married name, not maiden name for death certificates especially
• Corporate names and subjects can be searched by any or all words, but they need to be in the same order, so for "Salt Flats," "Salt," "Flats," or "Salt Flats" will work but "Flats Salt" will not

Digital Collections

Digital images of Death Certificates from 1905 to 1956 are available online, with a link from the index search result. Digital images of Prisoner's Pardon Application Case Files from 1892 to 1949 are also available online, as is the Sanpete County Death Register from 1898 to 1905. Digital images of Animal Brand books for 1849 to 1930 are also available, with a link from the index search result to the book volume, researchers will still need to navigate to the page number indicated by the index.
